Board Approves California Hospital IT System

May 24, 2006

The board of the Valley Health System hospital district in Hemet, Calif., on Monday approved developing a $5 million electronic health care information system, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reports.

The EHR system will link hospital medical records with patient records at Hemet Community Medical Group and Menifee Valley Community Medical Group. Dr. Kali Chaudhuri - who co-owns a company called Valley Information Management with the district - was involved with developing the IT system proposal. Chadhuri supports the system because it benefits the community, according to his attorney Bill Thomas, the Press-Enterprise reports.

Under a 15-year agreement, the medical groups will loan the district $5 million to purchase computer equipment and software. The loans later will be repaid using profits from the EHR system, which would charge district hospitals and others service fees (Atienza, Riverside Press-Enterprise, 5/23).
