HIMMS ESTABLISHES A RHIO FEDERATION

HIMMS establishes a RHIO Federation

HIMMS announced that it was forming a “Federation of RHIOs”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - October 21, 2005) – Recognizing the benefit of and need for collaboration in setting realistic expectations for the exchange of health information, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) today announced the formation of the HIMSS RHIO Federation. Robert Seliger, chair of the HIMSS Integration & Interoperability Steering Committee and CEO of Sentillion®, Inc., Andover, Mass., made the announcement at the HIMSS Public Policy Forum in Washington, D.C.

Through June 2008, the long-range plan for the HIMSS RHIO Federation will focus on three areas: chain of trust, business rules and harmonization. These components represent an integrated approach to sharing health information with each element enhancing and relying upon the next.
“HIMSS established this Federation to bring together all the necessary players and resources to share health information effectively and efficiently,” said HIMSS executive vice president, Carla Smith, NCMN, FHIMSS. “The Federation will help connect and provide support for RHIOs in the areas of advocacy and education while developing information and best practice tools.”
The Federation is open to verified Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) and Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) free of charge; HIMSS corporate and individual members can participate as a membership benefit. HIMSS developed this new initiative in support of the goals established in the Framework for Strategic Action, released in July 2004, by David Brailer, MD, PhD, national coordinator for health information technology in the Department of Health and Human Services.
THE RHIO HAS A NEW TELEPHONE CONTACT NUMBER 760-200-4856
